How to Prevent Worker Burnout
Prevention
Whether you are managing a team at a food distribution center or assisting seniors with housing services, the emotional demands of social and human services can significantly affect all team members, impacting their physical, emotional, and cognitive well-being.
Organizational leaders are crucial in preventing staff or volunteer burnout in nonprofit organizations. Effective leaders understand the importance of supporting staff well-being and establishing healthy boundaries.
How can leaders recognize the signs of burnout? According to the Nonprofit Learning Lab Website, common indicators of employee burnout include:
Fatigue and feeling drained
Physical systems such as headache and muscle tension
Difficulty concentrating
Feeling under-appreciated or experiencing loss of creativity or non motivated
Irritability and anxiety
To address the emotional demands of social and human services and prevent burnout in nonprofits, here are some suggested best practices:
Regular Wellness Check-Ins
Implement routine one-on-one check-ins where workers can discuss their workload, stress levels, and overall well-being. Checking in with your teams will help leaders identify potential issues early and provide support.
Training on Stress Management
Offer workshops and training sessions on stress management techniques, mindfulness, and self-care practices to equip staff with tools to cope with emotional demands.
Team Building Activities
Create opportunities for team bonding through social events, team-building exercises, or retreats that foster a sense of community and support—discovering new strategies to help workers enhance productivity by altering routines.
Encourage Open Communication
Foster a culture of open communication where employees feel comfortable sharing their concerns and challenges without fear of stigma.
By implementing or trying these suggested best practice solutions with your staff and volunteers, organizational leaders can better support their workers' well-being, reduce the risk of burnout, and enhance the overall effectiveness of their nonprofit mission.

We want to kindly remind you that submitting your monthly households and perpetual inventory reports by the 5th business day of each month is crucial for maintaining program efficiency and ensuring that resources are allocated appropriately. Late submissions can lead to account holds and disruptions in service, which we all want to avoid.
If you anticipate any challenges in meeting this deadline, please don’t hesitate to reach out to a member of the TEFAP team BEFORE the reports are due so that we may assist and assign an extension if needed. We’re here to support you and ensure a smooth process for everyone involved. Thank you for your continued partnership and dedication to serving our community!
